anglian water plc
Anglian Water is a provider of water and environmental services to some nine million customers world-wide. Anglian Water serves countries as diverse as China, Czech Republic and New Zealand as well as being one of the major UK water services company.

dwr cymru/welsh water ltd (part of Hyder plc)
DWR Cymru/Welsh Water supplies water services to an area which covers 20,400 square kilometres and its sewerage region covers 21,300 square kilometres. Around three million people are connected to one or both of their services.

east of scotland water
East of Scotland Water (ESW) provides water and waste water services to households and commercial customers in Edinburgh, Borders and Lothians, Forth Valley, Fife and Kinross. It also provides water to parts of East Dunbartonshire and North Lanarkshire. ESW serves 1.58 million people with water and 1.43 million customers receive waste water services from the company. It supplies around 723 megalitres of water every day of the year.

northern ireland water service
Northern Ireland Water Service supplies and distributes drinking water, and provides a collection system and treatment service for domestic sewage, surface water and trade effluent. It supplies on average some 681 megalitres of water per day to approximately 560,000 homes and 70,000 businesses and farms. The Service manages and maintains 20,000 kilometres of water main, 10,000 kilometres of sewers and operates reservoirs, pumping stations and treatment works at 2,600 locations.

north of scotland water authority
The North of Scotland Water Authority (NSWA) provides water and wastewater services to customers in cities, towns, villages, farms and crofts throughout northern Scotland including the Western Isles, Orkney and Shetland. Its area of operations is the largest of Scotland's three water authorities. NSWA covers 60% of Scotland, almost 18,000 square miles or 46,541 square kilometres, serves 1.1m people supplies 510,000 households and 50,000 businesses, employs around 1,900 staff, supplies 424 megalitres of water every day and runs 344 water treatment works and 648 wastewater treatment plants.

northumbrian water ltd (part of Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux SA)
Northumbrian Water is a water and wastewater company that provides 2.6 million people and many companies with drinking water and other services. The same customers use Northumbrian to remove their wastewater.

north west water ltd (part of United Utilities plc)
North West Water is a water and wastewater utility serving 7 million domestic users and 200,000 business customers. North West Water services 40,000 km of water mains, 30,000 km of sewers and 960 km of aqueduct.

severn trent water plc
Severn Trent Water serves over 8 million people across the heart of the UK. Severn Trent Water supplies 420 million gallons (1.9 billion litres) of drinking water a day and treat 600 million gallons (2.7 billion litres) of dirty water a day.

southern water services ltd (part of Scottish Power plc)
Southern Water provides over 600 million litres of drinking water to 1.7 million households a day. They also recycle wastewater from over four million people.

south west water ltd (part of Pennon Group plc)
South West Water provides services to 97% of people in its region. They provide sewerage services to only 88% as a significant number of people have private arrangements, such as septic tanks, which are common in rural areas.

thames water plc
Thames Water is one of the world's largest water and wastewater companies, serving 12 million customers in London and the Thames Valley - an area of more than 13,000 square kilometres (over 5,000 square miles). They have 14,000 employees and are active in 20 countries. They serve over 21 million people world-wide.

wessex water ltd (part of Azurix Corp)
Wessex Water is one of the regional water supply and sewerage businesses of England and Wales. They supply drinking water to around 1.1 million people and sewerage services to about 2.5 million people.

west of scotland water
West of Scotland Water (WSW) is one of three water authorities formed in conjunction with the local government reform in Scotland. From the 1st April 1996, WSW became responsible for the provision of both water and sewerage services to a population of about 2.4 million people in an area of 20,250 square kilometres which incorporates the industrial heartland of Scotland. WSW is the sixth largest water and sewerage operation in the UK.

yorkshire water services ltd (part of Kelda Group plc)
Yorkshire Water Services provides households and businesses in the Yorkshire region with water and sewerage services. They supply water to a population of 4.5 million domestic and 140,000 business customers. Yorkshire Water operates 116 water treatment works producing 1.2 billion litres of water every day.

Water UK is an organisation which brings together and represents the UK's water suppliers at a national level. It provides help and advice on most aspects of the water and sewerage business. Wherever possible, it works in collaboration with other groups - such as environmental organisations, consumer groups, academics and health experts.

The list of water companies below is not exhaustive and only includes companies that currently have a web site.

bournemouth and west hampshire water ltd (part of Biwater plc)
Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water was formed when Bournemouth Water Plc and West Hampshire Water Plc merged. Bournemouth and West Hampshire Water provides drinking water to about 500,000 people. Wastewater treatment and disposal is carried out by Wessex or Southern Water, depending on where customers live.

bristol water plc
Bristol Water provides over a million people in the Bristol region with drinking water. On average Bristol Water pipes 330 million litres of water a day, through its 164 pumping stations. Water is sanitised in one of 24 treatment works and then pumped to one of Bristol Water's 140 covered reservoirs where it is stored.

cambridge water plc (part of Union Fenosa)
Cambridge Water supplies an area of 453 square miles in south Cambridgeshire. Nearly 300,000 customers in 1997/98 were served with an average of 75,000 cubic metres (75,000,000 litres) of drinking water daily.

mid kent water plc
Mid Kent Water began operating in 1888 and today serves a population of around 563,000 with between 164 and 220 million litres of drinking water per day. Some 88% of the water supplied comes from over 100 wells and boreholes, with the remaining 12% coming from the River Medway and Bewl Water.

north surrey water ltd (part of Vivendi SA)
North Surrey Water is a water only company operating in the south-east of England. North Surrey Water supplies water to an area of 500 square kilometres.

portsmouth water plc (part of Brockhampton Holdings plc)
Portsmouth Water, founded in 1857, supplies drinking water to an area which covers 868 square kilometres. Portsmouth Water treats and supplies water for the personal use of a population exceeding 640,000 and many industries, large defence establishments, growers and farmers.

south east water plc (part of Bouygues SA)
South East Water supplies 400 million litres of drinking water in the south east of England everyday. South East Water provides water to 1.5 million people living and working across an area of 3607 square kilometres in Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire.

Since January 1999, Mid Southern Water plc operates under the South East Water plc name.

south staffordshire water plc
South Staffordshire Water, founded in 1853, supplies drinking water to 1.2 million people over 1500 square km in the West Midlands, South Staffordshire, South Derbyshire, North Warwickshire and North Worcestershire areas.

sutton and east surrey water ltd (part of East Surrey Holdings plc)
Sutton and East Surrey Water supplies water to more than 630,000 people in east Surrey, and parts of west Sussex, west Kent and south London. The supply area is 322 square miles (834 sq. km). Groundwater supplies provide 85 per cent of their water, with 15 per cent being extracted from one reservoir at Bough Beech.

three valleys water plc (part of Vivendi SA)
Three Valley Water was formed in 1990 after three companies, Colne Valley, Lee Valley and Rickmansworth Water, merged. Three Valleys supplies up to 700 million litres of water each day to 2.3 million customers in a 3,000 kilometre area covering the northern Home Counties and parts of north London.

office of water services (ofwat)
Ofwat is the governmental regulatory body responsible for making sure that the water and sewerage companies provide consumers with a good-quality and efficient service at a fair price. Their aim is to regulate the water and sewerage companies in a fair and open way so that the companies continue to improve the quality of service and value for money they provide for their customers.

environment agency
The Environment Agency aims to achieve major and continuous improvements in the quality of air, land and water. The Agency also encourages the conservation of natural resources, animals and plants and operates independently to the Government and Ofwat.

welsh environment agency
The Welsh Environment Agency has the same aims as the environment agency.

department of the environment, transport and the regions
The DETR aims to improve the quality of life by promoting sustainable development at home and abroad, fostering economic prosperity and supporting local democracy. The DETR is a governmental department run by the Ministry of Transport.

open
Open is a government departmental search engine with electronic databases on-line. White papers, changes in legislation, reports and inquiries are archived and available to the public.

world health organisation (who)
The WHO aims for all people around the world to have the highest possible level of health. Health, as defined in the WHO Constitution, is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

Greenpeace is an international environmental charity concerned with preserving natural habitats and environments.

friends of the earth
Friends of the Earth is the largest international network of environmental groups in the world, represented in 61 countries.

royal national lifeboat institution
The RNLI is a Registered Charity relying entirely on voluntary contributions. The Institution maintains 223 lifeboat stations around the coast of the UK & Ireland.

wateraid
WaterAid is the UK's specialist development charity working through partner organisations to help poor people in developing countries achieve sustainable improvements in their quality of life by improving domestic water supply, sanitation and associated hygiene practices.
